What Is Stone Paper? Is It Waterproof, Eco-Friendly and Good for Writing?
- What it is: a tree-free sheet made mostly from ground limestone (calcium carbonate), held together with a small amount of HDPE resin.
- Waterproof? Yes. Water beads on the page instead of soaking in.
- Eco-friendly? Better on trees and water, but it contains plastic resin, so it is not a perfect green choice.
- Good for writing? Very smooth. Gel pens, ballpoints and pencils do well; some inks dry slowly.

You have probably seen “stone paper” on a notebook label and wondered if it is a gimmick. It is not. It is a real writing surface with some clear strengths, and a few trade-offs worth knowing before you buy. Here is what it is, how it behaves, and which pens suit it.
What is stone paper?
Stone paper is a paper-like material made from crushed calcium carbonate, the mineral in limestone and marble, instead of wood pulp. A small amount of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) resin binds the powder into smooth, flexible sheets.
Makers use different ratios. One common figure is about 80% calcium carbonate and 20% HDPE, though some sources quote 60–90% stone.
Typical mix. Exact ratios vary by manufacturer.
How is stone paper made?
The stone is ground into a fine powder, mixed with the resin, and pressed into sheets in a dry process. Producers say it uses no trees, no bleach and no acids, and manufacturing is virtually waterless.
The stone often comes from marble or construction off-cuts that would otherwise be waste. That is why the sheet feels so smooth and looks so bright white: calcium carbonate is the same mineral already used to whiten ordinary paper.
Is stone paper waterproof?
Yes. Because the sheet is stone and resin rather than absorbent cellulose fibre, water sits on top and wipes off. It is also much harder to tear than pulp paper.
- Survives a coffee spill, rain on the way to work or a damp bag.
- Pages do not wrinkle or go soft when wet.
- Useful for field notes, kitchen jotting, travel and workshops.
One catch: the paper is waterproof, but your ink may not be. Some inks can smudge if you rub them while wet, so test your pen first.
Is stone paper eco-friendly?
Partly. Stone paper saves trees and a lot of water, but its HDPE binder is a plastic, so the honest answer is “greener in some ways, not in all.”
Figures are producer-reported and vary by factory and method.
What to keep in mind
- The resin binder is plastic. Stone paper should go with HDPE (type 2) plastics for recycling, not in the paper bin, where it can disrupt paper recycling.2
- Prolonged sunlight can break the sheet down over time, which is good for disposal but worth knowing for storage.3
- It is a strong pick if you want tree-free paper. It is not a plastic-free one.
Is stone paper good for writing?
Yes, with the right pen. The surface is very smooth with almost no drag, but it does not soak up ink like normal paper. Ink dries by evaporation, so fast-drying inks work best. Tap a pen type below.
Gel ink flows easily on the smooth surface and gives crisp lines. Give a few seconds to dry if you are left-handed or write fast.
Oil-based ballpoint ink sits well on the sheet and dries quickly. A dependable everyday choice.
Fineliners can feel wonderfully smooth, but water-based inks may stay wet longer. Test one line and let it dry before closing the book.
Graphite grips the stone-based surface. Expect a smooth, slightly different feel from regular paper.
Fountain pen ink is absorbed by normal paper, but stone paper does not absorb it, so ink may take longer to dry and can smear. Use a fine nib, a faster-drying ink and wait before closing the page.

Stone paper vs regular paper
| Feature | Stone paper | Regular paper |
|---|---|---|
| Main material | Calcium carbonate + HDPE resin | Wood pulp (cellulose) |
| Water | Waterproof | Absorbs and wrinkles |
| Tearing | Very tear resistant | Tears easily |
| Surface | Very smooth, bright | Varies, usually more texture |
| Ink drying | Evaporates; slower for some inks | Absorbs; usually faster |
| Trees and water | No trees, almost no water to make | Trees and a lot of water |
| Recycling | Treat as HDPE plastic | Paper recycling |
Who should buy a stone paper notebook?
- Travellers and commuters who want pages that survive monsoon showers and leaky bags.
- Gel, ballpoint and pencil users who like a smooth, fast feel.
- Eco-minded writers who want to avoid cutting trees and are fine with a resin binder.
- People who like a tough notebook that stands up to daily carry.
If you mostly write with fountain pens and prefer ink to sink in, a traditional premium paper such as the 120 gsm dot grid sheets in our premium notebooks may suit you better.

Stone paper FAQs
Is stone paper really waterproof?
Yes. The sheet is made of stone powder and resin, so water beads on the surface and wipes off. Test your pen, since some inks can still smudge if rubbed while wet.
Is stone paper plastic?
It contains plastic. About 20% of the sheet (varies by maker) is HDPE resin that binds the stone powder. The rest is calcium carbonate.
Is stone paper recyclable?
It can be recycled, but because of the HDPE binder it should go with HDPE (type 2) plastics, not with regular paper. Check your local recycling options.
Does stone paper feel like normal paper?
It looks similar but feels smoother and slightly slicker, with less texture or “tooth.” Many people enjoy how easily a pen glides.
Can I use a fountain pen on stone paper?
You can, but ink does not absorb into the sheet, so it may dry slowly and smear. A fine nib and a fast-drying ink help. Gel pens and ballpoints are easier choices.
Is stone paper tree-free?
Yes. It uses no wood pulp, so no trees are cut to make it.
